The study of physical science is the study of matter and energy. Students will visit these subjects again in high school as chemistry and physics.

á

The year begins with a discussion of what science is. Students learn about some of the tools that scientists use and safety procedures in the lab. Next, they are introduced to the concept of matter and what it is:

  • physical and chemical properties of matter
  • acids and bases
  • states of matter
  • elements, compounds and mixtures
  • atoms (atomic structure and the periodic table) and molecules
The study of matter ends with the Element Project.

The second half of the year focuses on forces, motion and energy. It will start with a review of simple machines. From there, students will study the following:
  • forces
  • motion
  • energy
  • electric circuits
  • heat
  • waves, sound and light
Students will do a research project related to energy.

Supplies needed: one green binder with paper and lots of pens and pencils.

Grading: Marking period grades break down as follows:
55% tests, quizzes and projects
35%áactivity and lab grades
10%áhomework and participation.
To receive an A+ in this class, the student must have a 100% average.
